[The day starts like any other since he started working at Seventh Heaven a month back: go in, open up and prepare what he has to, make the food for the morning customers. Aleos has learned to take it all in stride, and once the number of people starts to dwindle down he takes time to rest against the counter, fiddling with his journal. There was something that had been bothering him since before he arrived, and now... It's a good time as any to ask, isn't it? So he takes a few deep breaths and starts to speak, hoping he doesn't sound too much look a fool.]

voice.

What does a name mean to you? Almost everyone has them, but it's not exactly uncommon to go by a nickname, or another name altogether. The latter part of the group interests me a little more—why did you not keep your original name?

... Why didn't you change your name? [He must sound so stupid with this, and he shakes his head a little in frustration. Public speaking wasn't his strongest suit.]

And if you've had enough hearing about that, I guess I'll take the time to ask about a fighting instructor, or partner. Self-defense, firearms and a little swordsmanship, that's what I know. But I'm not calling myself an experienced fighter.

[That should be good enough. Once he's received some answers and dealt with anyone lingering in the restaurant as his shift ends, he'll be heading out to go mill about the battle dome, observing anyone using the rooms but not in a hurry to go in himself, if at all.]

( The mention of self-defense pings but barely registers. It is his question of names is what catches her interest, has her answering him. )

I suppose the reason why people choose to take up a new name or give themselves a nickname is to make it easier. ( Believe her: If she could have called herself 'Jane Doe' and gotten away with it, she would have. It was easier after all. ) Be it for themselves or for others. I think it all comes down to convenience for many.

[Karla hasn't taken much time to think about her own name, or the title she had been given. The title she didn't much care for, but she rolled with it regardless.]

[She is, however, more curious about his second question.]

...Do you need a fighting instructor? Or are you volunteering to become one?

Oh my. I think I heard someone mention that there was a fighting school. She suggested to me that I should teach, but I know how how well I would be able to...

Sadly, I don't know anything else about it. Have you checked the guide?

My name means a lot to me. It was given to me by my family, so of course I take it with gratitude. They're your blood and bond, you know? When all else fails, you rely on them. It's the name that several people have gotten to know me over the years, even people I consider family, even if we aren't blood related.

My name....? [He pauses.] I like my name well enough, though I have taken to letting people call me by nickname here if it is more convenient for them.

[Normally, only people who were close to Freyjadour called him 'Frey', but here he'd quickly found the reactions more trouble than it was worth.] But a nickname doesn't necessarily mean you have abandoned or dislike your name, in my opinion.

Because I lost my memory at one point.

[WELP.] I like my new name though. I mean, I have ties to my old identity in some ways, but I'm someone different now than I was-- [...50 years ago before cold sleep] ...before. Now it'd just be weird if I went by who I was before.
Edited (spelling errors made it read weird, sorry :C) 2013-06-07 05:36 (UTC)

That is not what I mean at all. [He shakes his head, unseen.] but if 'Freyjadour' is too complex for someone's tastes, I do not mind it either way.

Though it might be considered a bit unseemly back home.

Yeah, I was asleep for a long time. The name I go by now was one I thought was given to me, but I found out that wasn't really the case.

[Well... There was a handful of people who called him Dia mostly because of Pearl. Would that count? Mmhmm.]

My best friend... [Diamond misses Pearl. Still. He clears his throat, feeling Nala's continuous motherly warmth seep into him. He's not ready for her to leave.] Ah, he couldn't say 'Diamond' when we were kids, so he gave me the nickname Dia instead. Some people here have picked it up too but I don't mind~.

[The second part's going unanswered because if anything, he needs one.]

I sort of got used to my name after seventeen years.

[Or, translated, she's not the sort of person with friends giving her whimsical nicknames, and 'Brain' at school doesn't count. So she may as well stick to Daria.]

Primrose Everdeen, but I go by Prim. It's not...a change, as such, it's just what I grew up with. My sister, my parents - they called me Prim.

I like both names, though. My father picked out the first one.

[Curious as to if his words mean this topic might mean what Frey thinks it means, he works to set up a quick filter for Aleos' privacy. Once he's done--]

Are you asking because of your name?
